Why You Should Incorporate Fish Into Your Diet

There are many reasons why you should incorporate fish into your diet. Fatty fish like tuna, mackerel, salmon, etc. are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which can help:

  1. Lower your blood triglyceride (fat) levels and reduce your risk of heart disease
  2. Reduce inflammation if you have arthritis or acne
  3. Improve your brain health and reduce your risk for memory loss
  4. Battle depression
  5. The list keeps going!

Fish is also a rich source of Vitamin D and B12. Vitamin D is essential for bone health and your immune system. Vitamin B12 is essential for heart health and your nervous system.

The American Heart Association recommends eating fish at least twice a week in order to optimize these benefits. Whether you broil it, bake it, mix it with a little light mayo, the benefits are definitely worth it.

This is one of my favorite fish dishes I like to have once a week:

  • Baked salmon drizzled with a little olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper       
  • Black rice cooked in chicken broth
  • Steamed broccoli or any vegetable I have on hand 

Is Coconut Oil Actually Good For You?

With all the of the popular food trends going around you've probably heard about coconut oil being a "super food". But is this actually true?  While it does have some health benefits, it is high saturated fat and should be treated like any other fat....USED IN MODERATION. Treat it as if it were butter! If you decide to use coconut oil, make sure you are using the recommended serving size that's found on the nutrition label.

There are other oils out there such as olive oil and flaxseed oil you may want to consider trying that have healthy benefits and cost nearly the same as coconut oil. 12 Goals For 12 Months...Write Them Down!

When the clock strikes 12 mid-night on January 1st write down 12 goals you want to accomplish in 2016. 

 

You can write down anything from achieving optimal health, running a marathon, opening your own restaurant business, being closer to your family, making new friends, to becoming more adventurous; its up to you!

 

Once, you write them down, here what you should do!

 

1.  Share them with a person you trust. 

2.  Make that particular person your accountability partner.  

3.  Do one or two things each day to help you achieve your ultimate goals.

4.   Post them on your steering wheel in your car.

5.  And, if there anything I can do to help, call our office and schedule an appointment!

8 out of 22 Food Jonezi’s Goals Became Miracles: Thank You!

Everyone knows the celebration of the New Year is my favorite holiday.  As the New Year approaches, I completely stop everything I’m doing and begin to slowly isolate myself from the world.  I start to reflect on all my accomplishments and challenges throughout the year. 

I make note of them in my favorite journal. I pray about them.  I meditate on them.  I smile about all my achievements.  I’ll boastfully tell myself, well done.   And, I humph about all the mistakes I made.  At this moment, I start to close my eyes and think, think, and think harder about how I can make those mistakes become miracles.  Oh no, not miracles that you read from a magical story, but miracles that are accomplished by everyday people.  

These people have worked hard to turn their challenges into successes--whether it’s reaching a weight goal, controlling blood sugar, making wiser food choices, or adding 10 extra minutes to their fitness regimen. These “miracles” were once a challenge and now have become an accomplishment and an inspiration to others.  By the way, I love these types of stories.

 

I would like to take a moment to share my accomplishments this year and those challenges that I will continue to work on and turn into miracles in 2016. 

2015 Accomplishments:

April 23, 2015, I scribbled down 22 visions/goals on bright green sticky notes. Eight of them actually became my miracles.  Pretty good, right!   I actually took pictures of them, so you can witness and share these moments:  Here they are:

 

Vision #2: 10 new clients by the end of the year

Miracle:   I gained 30 new clients by the end of the year.

Vision #3: Partner with 4 Corporate/Government Agencies

Miracle: I have partnered with Trusted Health Plan to facilitate a nutrition and wellness program every Friday.  I am waiting to hear back from other organizations, so keep your fingers cross.

Vision #4: Be the go-to registered dietitian to provide nutrition and food advice for mainstream magazines and blogs.

Miracle: I was featured on E-How, LiveStrong.com, ActiveTimes, Del V-Immune Blog, MenFitness.com, World-Lifestyle and SafeBee.  I am currently a health and nutrition contributor writer for Watchfit.com.  

Vision #6: Business will expand and I will hire full time staff.

Miracle:  It surely did.  I have four superstars who have joined my team to help expand my brand and services throughout the DMV. 

Vision #8: Have celebrity clients.

Miracle:  Well, not really.  But, I did work with the owners of Mielle Organics Hair Products and actor Taye Diggs follows me on Twitter! 

Vision #9:  Custom T-shirts will sell-out at May 6th event!

Miracle:  I sold plenty of my “&Healthy” lifestyle brand fitted shirts this year.  The best news is the Nutrition Department at Andrew University has placed an order for their students.   Food Jonezi and team are working hard to get them in stores…we will keep you updated!

Vision #11: Be confident, strong, determined, and always be thankful for where God has brought me from and where He will take me.

Miracle:  This particular goal, I strive for each day of my life.  I always give thanks to God for blessing me with the gift to share and teach about food and nutrition and heal others.

Vision #14:  Be the Best Registered Dietitian in the World.

Miracle:  I have scribbled this saying on every page in all my journals.  I smile each time I read this saying.  I believe my clients think I’m the best Registered Dietitian in the World.  Heck, I know my family believes I am too.

 

My Sticky-Notes of 2015 Visions: 

 

Challenges to turn into miracles:

Vision #1: Continue to be the best Registered Dietitian in the world.

 

Vision #2: Continue to provide first-class nutrition counseling and services to clients.

 

Vision #3:  Accepting that the answer “no” is not always a bad thing.  I must understand that it’s God’s way of allowing new people, new opportunities, and new adventures to come in my life and bless me in unimaginable ways.

 

Vision #4:  Stop taking life so seriously; and therefore, be more kind and generous to myself.  I really love this one.

 

To this end, I would like to say thank you to my wonderful team who have worked with me to provide A-1 services to my clients and social media followers. 

In 2016, we have come up with a plan to raise the bar in giving you (our clients and supporters) the best care and nutrition services in the DMV.   We will be offering monthly memberships, nutrition and health online classes, weekly access to one of our registered dietitians through our new app, and our new wedding weight-loss program.   Stay tuned!

Truth: I have hard time motivating myself. I depend on others to inspire me.

Dare: Post an inspiring quote or message that speaks to you! If you don't have one, simply tell yourself, "I GOT THIS" 

Remember, you got this.  There is nothing you can not do if you give it all you got!

Truth: Taking selfies are people who are conceited and egotistic.

Challenge: Prepare healthy meals and snacks in advance!

Your Truth: I simply do not have time to prepare or eat in the mornings.  I am always rushing for work. 

Dare: Prepare your meals, snack, and even breakfast for tomorrow.  Another suggestion is to have ready-to-go foods handy such as low-fat yogurt, nuts, peanut butter on whole wheat crackers, and boiled eggs.

Truth: I eat meat with each meal.  I love burgers, chicken and seafood.

Challenge: No Coffee, No Coffee Time

Truth: I drink coffee everyday!  I can’t imagine not having a cup of coffee each day. 

Dare: Start your day with either green tea or iced water to boost your metabolism.  Both green tea and water have shown to boost metabolism to keep you fuel throughout the day.

#Dare2BeFit Challenge: Day 3

Good morning challengers!

How did yesterday's dare go? Today, we're going to try something that may be a little different for some of us. I'm challenging you to step out of your comfort zone and try working out with a partner or a group. One of my favorite reasons to workout with a partner or a group is the motivation I receive. When I'm with someone else, we can encourage one another and help each other to push through the tough moments. Already have a workout buddy? Give them a shoutout in the comments below!

Challenge: Join a buddy or group to workout.

Your Truth: I feel more comfortable exercising alone. I feel like other people are looking at me.

Food Jonezi's Dare: Move your buns to today, but move along with a workout group. You may learn new moves or meet a new friend. We double dare you to get out of your comfort zone and try something new.
